Glimpse Through the Years
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) was
formed on 1 January, 1992, by a decree issued by
His Highness Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum
to take over and merge the Dubai Electric Company
and the Dubai Water Department that had been operating
independently for several years until then. Both
these organizations were established in 1959 through
the foresight and initiative of His Highness Shaikh
Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the late Ruler of Dubai,
as government supported bodies with the objective
of making available to the people of Dubai an adequate
and reliable supply of electricity and water.
the year 1959, His Highness Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed
Al Maktoum issued a decree to establish the Dubai
Electricity Company (DEC) with the objective of
generating electricity and transmitting and distributing
it to consumers in Dubai. The Company set up its
first office in a rented house near Al Nasr Square,
Deira, and soon after started to supply electricity
to its first consumer. Thus started the operations
of a dynamic organization that was to play a pivotal
role in spurring the growth and development of Dubai,
ushering in a bright era for its people.
Dubai Water Department
1959, the same year that the Dubai Electricity Company
was established, His Highness Shaikh Rashid bin
Saeed Al Maktoum, the then Ruler of Dubai, ordered
the establishment of a specialized organization
to carry out the project of supplying Dubai with
water. This was a momentous juncture in the history
of the Emirate for, with adequate supply of water
and power, Dubai could now begin to confidently
undertake a prudent program of modernization and
establish itself as a bustling center of trade and
after more than three and a half decades, DEWA is
an inspiring success story known for its efficiency
and reliability in every facet of its operations.
Constant planning and forecasting to meet the growing
demands of the consumer has always been DEWA's well
entrenched philosophy. Owing to this policy, the
Authority has come a long way in serving the consumers
and thereby making its own contributions to the
economic growth of Dubai.
DEWA employs a workforce of about 4000 employees
who constantly endeavour to see that both the quantity
and quality of services provided are of the highest
standards in consistency and reliability.
the expansion continues in order to meet the ever
growing demand for electricity and water, and keeping
this in mind DEWA continues to maintain its corporate
structure and functioning in the most professional
and advanced ways to ensure its continued success
in the years to come.
